Yes, it’s that time of the year again.
For umpteen of years, I was plagued with Seasonal allergies. The constant headaches that wouldn’t let up. The pressure in the sinuses and face. Runny nose. Nasal and sinus congestion.
Miserable. Simply Miserable.
Itchy eyes, red eyes that looked like I was on something. Dizziness & lightheadedness. Unable to sleep because I just couldn’t breathe.
Oh, what Misery.
Low energy. Sometimes chest congestion and some trouble breathing.
Misery!
It’s Spring. My favorite time of the year. Time to be outside playing in the dirt in my garden. Time to take a walk in the neighborhood, the park. Only, I can’t. I’m hiding inside my house, afraid to face the pollens.
Antihistamines, steroids, and decongestants were prescribed. They worked for a brief moment…and then..
This was my life for years. If you suffer from this ailment, you get the drift.About 9 years ago, my body hit rock bottom and I developed severe allergies to foods, toiletries, perfumes, etc.
Since drugs, aka medications, did not solve my many health problems, I turned to Holistic Lifestyle…BINGO!
YES, changing to a primarily Plant-based diet, drinking plenty of water, lots of rest, and sunlight have been my saving grace.
There are several foods that we consume regularly that were particularly bothersome for my allergies. Some of them are:
● Milk
● Dairy
● Cheese
● Excess sugar
● Bread, cookies, crackers due to the wheat that’s present. Wheat creates mucus.
● Fried Foods
● Margarine
● Processed Meats like bacon, salami
● Sweetened drinks like sodas
Here are a few specific plants that were and are still quite helpful for my allergies & sinusitis issues. Inflammation is often responsible for that headache, sinus & facial pressure, low feeling, lack of energy, nasal congestion, chest congestion.
Anti-inflammatory Foods:
■ Ginger Root
■ Turmeric Root
● Onion
■ Garlic
■ Honey
■ Horseradish
■ Peppers like Chili or Cayenne peppers
■ The Berries
[ ] Drinking plenty of warm or room temperature water
[ ] Drink herbal teas with organic honey
✔My friend introduced me to this cocktail:
Add garlic cloves to a bottle of raw organic honey. Take 1 teaspoon of this honey daily.
✔Another friend suggested this:
Add chopped, raw onion to a bottle of raw organic honey. Take 1 teaspoon of this honey daily.
✔ I also place a slice of ginger root in my mouth and go about my business all day, leaving it there. This has been very beneficial to me. Alternating ginger root with garlic clove.
✔ Apple cider vinegar with the mother in warm water as a tea has also been quite beneficial to me. Add a bit of honey for a delightful flavor
✔ Whilst shopping at the local store, the Indian shop keeper mentioned an Ayurvedic remedy for inflammation that I’ll also share with you:
▪︎ 1 teaspoon organic turmeric powder.
▪︎ 1/4 cup warm water
Mix together and drink like tea. Enjoy!
The bottom line is:
A Healthy diet with plenty of plant-based foods such as those listed above. Lots of vegetables and fruits. Less processed foods, less sugary foods & drinks have been very helpful for me to get a handle on the Seasonal Allergies. A Healthy Lifestyle is a remedy for what ails us.
Now is a good time to get a jump start on this. Spring is just around the corner
