“I strongly advise everyone to have a trusted relative or friend to be your advocate when you go to the doctor, a clinic, a long-term care facility, rehabilitation center, or the hospital. Be sure to have your power of attorney & health care surrogate/health care proxy/living will legal documents prepared now. Make a copy & keep it with you all the time. Discuss your desires & wishes including end of life decisions with your healthcare surrogate and be sure to give them a copy of these documents to them. Due to the HIPPA law, your loved ones may not be able to get any information about your health condition from the healthcare team if they do not have a legal document stating that they can. That’s where the aforementioned legal documents come in handy & important. Someone you want will be able to speak, advocate for you if you can’t do so or unable to make decisions for yourself. Sometimes we just need another set of eyes & ears although we’re still competent. Illnesses make us very anxious & unable to think clearly in a crisis or emergency”.
